Stone Arch Bridge closure switches to downtown side December 2
ROSEVILLE, Minn. – Starting the week of December 2, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will close the downtown Minneapolis side of the Stone Arch Bridge. The portion of Portland Avenue that crosses under the Stone Arch Bridge will also be closed to vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians. These closures are necessary to begin preparing for restoration work that will occur in spring through fall 2025, and to keep the public and crews safe during construction.
While these closures take place, the St. Anthony Main side of the bridge will reopen, allowing pedestrians and bicyclists to walk or bike to the middle of the bridge and turn around at the new closure point.
Pedestrians and bicyclists can use the Third Avenue Bridge as a detour to cross the Mississippi River.
The downtown Minneapolis side of the bridge will be closed through fall 2025.
All construction activities and traffic impacts are weather and schedule permitting and subject to change.
Starting in April 2024, crews began repairing the Stone Arch Bridge spanning the Mississippi River on the edge of downtown Minneapolis. Crews are repairing and replacing stone, replacing the mortar on the entire bridge, and making other repairs as needed. Stone repair and mortar replacement will slow deterioration and improve the condition of the bridge. Construction is anticipated to be complete by spring 2026.
