Public invited to open house at new MnDOT truck station in Hawley on Nov. 20

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation invites the public to attend an open house on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 3 to 6:30 p.m., at the MnDOT truck station in Hawley, 323 Michael St. S. This is a free event for the entire community to come check out the new facility, which was completed in September 2024.

At the event, the public will have the opportunity to tour the buildings, meet local staff, and learn more about the equipment MnDOT uses to maintain federal and state highways in the area.

MnDOT’s new District 4 campus includes a new 12,200-square-foot facility with office space and warm storage, new cold storage, new salt shed and large-capacity brine making capabilities. Brine is a liquid chemical that activates the salt used on icy roadways. On-site brine making enables crews to clear the roads faster while reducing overall salt usage.

The extra storage space also allows MnDOT to house a tow plow in Hawley, which will greatly benefit the area during the winter months.

The existing facility was recently sold to the Clay County Highway Department.

MnDOT District 4 is comprised of more than 1,567 miles of state highway across 12 counties in west central Minnesota. There are 17 truck stations located throughout District 4 in Alexandria, Appleton, Barnesville, Benson, Breckenridge, Detroit Lakes, Evansville, Fergus Falls, Glenwood, Hawley, Henning, Mahnomen, Moorhead, Morris, Perham, Ortonville, and Wheaton.

MnDOT invites and encourages participation by all. If you need an ASL, a foreign language interpreter, or other reasonable accommodation, or need documents in an alternative format (such as braille or large print) for this email or event, please email your request to Janet Miller at [email protected] or call 651-366-4720.
